PENSION SCHEME PROVIDES LIFELINE FOR PUBLIC SECTOR WORKERS: A POLICE OFFICER’S STORY OF HOPE AND SECURITY.
By Gifty Botchway
Police Officer, Mr. Akufo shared his personal experiences, highlighting its benefits, challenges, and the profound impact it has had on his life and family.
The pension scheme, an established framework of rules and regulations, ensures retirement income security for workers in the public sector. It provides a steady income during retirement, tax relief on contributions, and protection for dependents in the event of a member’s death. For Mr. Akufo, who has been contributing to the scheme for the past 10 years, the deductions from his salary represent more than just a financial obligation—they are an investment in his future.
"My expectations are keen on enjoying a better establishment after retirement. The deductions I make today will save my future tomorrow. It’s a way to ensure that my hard work pays off after years of service," Mr. Akufo said.
Mr. Akufo emphasized the numerous benefits of the pension scheme, particularly its role in providing financial security. "The scheme ensures a steady income during retirement, which is crucial for maintaining a good standard of living," he explained. He also highlighted the protection it offers to dependents, noting that in the event of a member’s death, lump sums and pensions are provided to support surviving family members.
Additionally, the state offers tax relief on contributions made to pension schemes, making it an attractive option for workers. "The tax benefits are an added advantage, making it easier for us to contribute without feeling the financial burden," he added.
Despite its advantages, Mr. Akufo acknowledged some challenges associated with the pension scheme. One major concern is the strict withdrawal and transfer rules. "Employees often cannot access their pension benefits until they reach retirement age, and in most cases, they cannot transfer their pensions if they change jobs," he said. These limitations can create difficulties for workers who need immediate access to their funds or who transition between public and private sector employment.
Mr. Akufo also compared public sector pension schemes with those in the private sector. He explained that public sector schemes are established under Acts of Parliament and are underwritten by the government, ensuring that benefits are guaranteed by law. "The terms are clear, and the benefits are secure, which gives us peace of mind," he said.
In contrast, private sector pension schemes are typically set up under trust law, which may not offer the same level of security. "The public sector scheme is more reliable because it is backed by the government," he noted.
For Mr. Akufo, the pension scheme has been more than just a retirement plan—it has been a lifeline. When his mother, also a public sector worker, passed away, her contributions to the scheme provided crucial support for her dependents. "The benefits from my mother’s contributions helped fund my education at a time when there was no other support. It was a blessing," he shared.
This personal experience has motivated Mr. Akufo to contribute diligently to the scheme. "Tomorrow is never promised, so I contribute wholeheartedly to secure a better future for myself and my dependents. If anything happens to me, I know my family will be taken care of," he said.
Mr. Akufo also praised SSNIT for its role in supporting families during difficult times. "SSNIT has been a great help to me since my mother’s passing. Her contributions ensured that we, her dependents, were not left stranded," he added.
Mr. Akufo urged all public sector workers to take the pension scheme seriously and contribute consistently. "The scheme is not just about retirement; it’s about securing your future and the future of your loved ones. It’s a safety net that we all need," he emphasized.
His story serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of the pension scheme in providing financial security and hope for public sector workers and their families. As Mr. Akufo continues his service as a police officer, he remains confident that his contributions today will pave the way for a brighter tomorrow.
